Fashion Friday: My Work Day Attire

For todays Fashion Friday post I wanted to post an outfit that you would catch me in if you saw me at work. I love dressing up and putting a little more effort into my hair in the evenings and on the weekends, but during the work week I'm often just in jeans, my Toms, and rocking a headband and bun. This kind of feels like a no makeup selfie or something... straight from work to the blog, here it is.

Earlier this week I met with Ashley of Sailor's Omen to discuss an upcoming photoshoot with Foxtale Photography for Fashion Friday. I met Ashley a couple years ago but we haven't spent much time together even though I know we would get along really well. We are both into fashion, being crafty (she has her own jewelry line) and of course crystals. She seems like someone I could really get along with.

In brainstorming the style we wanted to go for with the shoot we came up with a color palette, threw around a few ideas, then took a stroll around Marshalls to see if we could spike our creative stylings further. We found a few things that could work, talked about some other pieces we would like to get our hands on, and each left with a bar of soap. Yes, soap. Aromatherapy goes well with the ideas behind the "powers" of crystals and the Aromatherapy Herbal Soaps captured both of our attention as much as a royal blue top did. I discovered a new scent, Comfrey Root; the smell is similar to bergamot or some other earthy scent.

My diamond necklace from hubs, a watch, and my wedding rings are pretty much the only pieces of jewelry I wear between 8 and 5 during the week. Sometimes I'll throw in a bracelet, wear a statement necklace instead or switch my Toms out for boots, but my work look is pretty casual.

Thriving Under Thirty: Sailor's Omen

I had the pleasure of meeting Ashley with Sailor's Omen a few weeks ago at an event in town. Ashley is an inspiring artist and I was immediately drawn to her love for crystals. She incorporates natural elements into each of her designs with melding tones that leave their wearer with positive vibes.

Ashley of Sailor's Omen

What is your biggest source of inspiration?
Hmm... Biggest source? That’s a tough one because they’re constantly changing. I am drawn to different creations at different times depending on how I’m feeling and what I surround myself with. Three artists that I always check when I want to remind myself of what is possible is De Petra (depetra.com), Wanderluster Dreams (wanderlusterdreams.com), and BreakAStone (www.etsy.com/shop/BreakAstone). Their designs and the materials they work with are just incredible.
The person that inspires me the most is Laura Mazurek from Roots & Feathers and The Bohemian Collective (rootsandfeathers.co/). I honestly don’t know how she keeps up with everything – and at the quality she does it, too! She creates such beauty in her home and in her shop, she blogs, she works, she stays beautiful and healthy AND she makes it look effortless. HOW DOES SHE DO IT?!? lol

What were the biggest obstacles you faced to getting where you are now with Sailor’s Omen?
Finding my own unique style has definitely been a challenge. Looking back on all the designs from the early days I was all over the board. It feels like I still am – kind of. I make all my jewelry from the heart and sometimes my tastes are just all over the place. One day I feel like a rock’n rolla, another like a boho goddess and it's been hard to harness a full collection that speaks through one true voice. I feel my summer collection is a step up from anything I've done in the past. And the lookbook is pretty out of this world too!

What has been your most popular/best selling item?
Everyone loves my bohemian hair sticks! They’re super cute, one of a kind and more than reasonably priced.

Do you have any words of advice for other creatives looking to succeed with their artistic talents?
Four things: First, make sure you’re doing what you love. There has to be some facet to what you are doing that makes you consistently yearn for more- to learn, to grow, to gain satisfaction.
Second, make it yours. Stand out from the crowd and do what feels right for you. People will know when you’re being fake.
Third, the best way to succeed is to never ever give up. If something doesn't work, have the courage to overcome those obstacles and try another angle.
Last but not least, don’t get discouraged by other people’s success – get inspired! Success is all about drive and marketing. You don’t have to mimic others’ advertising strategy, but you can get a lot of good ideas on where to start your campaign.

Take a look at their summer lookbook and tell me what you think. I am loving the hunter and gatherer theme, even her Etsy items are named accordingly in her shop!
