Thriving Under Thirty: Abigail Hoppen of Oh Abigail

Abigail and I found each other through the Lucky Community. Clearly a driven, motivated individual, she is a perfect candidate for a Thriving Under Thirty post. Her fashion sense is great too as you will see from her shop.
She recently transferred to strictly online from a brick and mortar shop and has some serious inspiration for you on owning your own business. Along with the interview below, Abigail was willing to give me a coupon code for my lovely readers, so read on and be sure to comment below!

I love that you always have time for lunch with your Grandma. How do you keep everything balanced and have time for life outside of working on Oh Abigail?
It is a constant balancing act. In addition to Oh Abigail I also work a full time job in marketing. I read once in a cheesy self help book (that actually made good points) "You don't "make" time for things, no one person can create time so what are you willing to sacrifice?" For me, sometimes it's my free time, a business opportunity (or sanity) but I love what I do and I wouldn't trade it for the world. It's all about what means more to me.

What has been your biggest obstacle moving to strictly online from a brick and mortar shop?
Moving from a brick and mortar shop to being strictly online had a lot of positives and negatives. Closing the shop, it was hard not to feel like a failure. It was extremely hard to tell customers you were moving, especially when they would say it was their "escape". The other obstacle was having people find you. It takes a tremendous amount of networking and media efforts to get your site found from the millions out there. The biggest pro would be working from home in my pajamas. :)

How do you pick pieces for your shop? Any major source of inspiration that guides you?
My rule is if I'm not obsessed with it, it doesn't hit my shop. I only buy pieces that I can't live without. There are so many amazing websites out there offering everything you could possibly need. I want to connect personally with my customers. Those that shop at share my obsessions and taste, I can best connect to them if I'm staying true to myself.

What has been your best selling item?
Hands down the most popular item(s) in the shop are scarves. Living in Michigan they are a must! The best selling one is the mixology scarf in both the infinity and regular style. I can't keep it in stock!
What advice would you give to someone looking to open their own online business?
The best advice I can give to someone who is looking to start their own online business is 1.) Know yourself - know what you love, know what you want, set goals, sell/offer what you love and know.  2.) Know your customer - What is your target audience? What are the trends? What are they looking to get from your site? 3.) Really want it. Online is hard work. Be prepared to work your brains out. The end reward is worth it though! I promise.

Here are a few of my favorites from Oh Abigail. The Write This Down necklace is one I think all bloggers need. Use promo code "justmeaghan" for 25% off and free shipping from now - March 1, 2014.

This is some much-needed advice. I dream of owning my own brick & mortar one day, but always struggle with that and an online shop. There's definitely a lot! Great post
